It's not surprising that fathers of aspergers children often see a lot of themselves in their aspie offspring. After all, the syndrome, which researcher Simon Baron Cohen famously described as the "extreme male brain," affects males more than females by a 10-to-1 margin. The condition's strong gender bias puts fathers of aspies in a curious position. Genetically, some are on the cusp of being "on the spectrum." Others are clearly (if unofficially) aspies, but remained undiagnosed because they grew up long before educators and clinicians were giving a name to their unusual brand of thinking.
The point? Fathers of aspies (and dad's who are aspies) have much to teach each other and their kids about coping with asperger's related mind blindness and the social and emotional challenges it produces. They also have lessons to impart about the gifts that come with being an aspie, like an uncanny ability to notice subtle (yet ultimately important) details that more neuro-typical people reflexively gloss over.
This group is open to fathers who have a son or daughter with Aspergers Syndrome, PDD-NOS or High-Functioning Autism.
